Background

This is used both as a recollection of the Buddha's enlightened qualities and as a meditation mantra, particularly within the Thai Forest tradition of Ajahn Chah. When practiced alongside mindfulness of breathing (ānāpānasati) it serves as an anchor to fasten attention: silent mentally thinking "bud" on the in-breath and "dho" on the out-breath (or simply thinking "in" and "out"), extending the word for the full duration of each breath.
