Background

I recite these each morning not as ideals I’ve already mastered, but as directions for the day. They remind me how I want to meet whatever arises with intention rather than habit:

  1. May I be generous and helpful
  2. May I be pure, virtuous, and disciplined
  3. May I be free from lust, craving, and desire
  4. May I be wise and share my knowledge
  5. May I be strenuous, energetic, and persevering
  6. May I be patient and able to forgive others
  7. May I be honest and truthful
  8. May I be firm and resolute
  9. May I be kind, compassionate, and friendly
  10. May I be humble, calm, quiet, and serene

I return to these intentions again and again, knowing that practice is not about perfection, but about remembering.
